Designed for a retired couple looking to downsize and move closer to their community, Kingston Beach House offers a compact home shaped around the needs of its owners and the qualities of its coastal setting.
Located within a heritage precinct in the beachside suburb of Kingston Beach, the house takes its architectural form from an interpretation of the surrounding suburban context.

Place
Set within a dense suburban environment, the house responds to both its heritage context and the coastal climate. Its form and orientation were carefully considered to embrace sunlight throughout the day while providing protection from prevailing winds.

Process
The house is organised around an L-shaped plan that folds around a central outdoor deck. Living spaces and bedrooms extend towards this sheltered space, creating a close relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
The arrangement allows the owners to enjoy sunlight and outdoor living throughout the year, with the building itself providing protection from the prevailing winds.

Impact
Kingston Beach House brings together the practical considerations of downsizing with a design that supports a close connection to outdoor living and the surrounding community, while enabling aging in place.
