The redevelopment of John Paul II Catholic Primary School focused on improving the functionality, flexibility and accessibility of the existing campus, providing contemporary learning environments suited to the school's educational philosophy and the needs of its students and staff.
Combining the refurbishment of existing buildings with carefully integrated new facilities, the project sought to make the most of the school's existing resources while delivering durable, high-quality learning and activity spaces within a considered construction budget.

Place
The redevelopment brought together existing school buildings and new facilities, including a library, kindergarten and sports facilities, creating a more comprehensive and contemporary learning environment.
Working within an established campus, the project provided an opportunity to improve the utility of existing spaces while accommodating the school's evolving educational and recreational needs. The combination of refurbishment and new construction enabled investment to be directed towards the areas of greatest benefit to the school.

Process
Existing learning areas were refurbished and modernised to provide more functional, spatially appropriate and acoustically considered environments. Flexibility and adaptability were central to the design, allowing spaces to support a range of teaching methods and learning activities.
The design balanced the practical demands of a busy primary school with the need for robust, low-maintenance and cost-effective solutions. By making considered use of existing buildings alongside targeted new facilities, the redevelopment focused on achieving lasting improvements to the campus while making responsible use of the available budget.
“From the beginning it was clear that 1+2 were able to genuinely understand our goals and produce creative and cost-effective responses to the design brief. In my role as project supervisor and coordinator, I could not have been happier with the professional approach and the outcomes achieved as a result of the efforts of this firm.”

Impact
The redevelopment has enhanced the school's capacity to support contemporary teaching and learning, providing improved facilities and more adaptable environments for students and staff. The combination of refurbished buildings and new learning, library, kindergarten and sports facilities has strengthened the range of spaces available to the school, supporting both everyday learning and broader school activities.
The project demonstrates the value of taking a strategic approach to school redevelopment: making better use of existing buildings, directing investment where it can have the greatest effect, and delivering durable, flexible facilities designed to serve the school community over the long term. The result is a more functional and adaptable campus, achieved through a balance of educational needs, architectural quality and responsible budget management.
