PHOTOGRAPHY

Located in Mount Nelson on the suburban fringe of Hobart, Evans Vogel House is a compact three-bedroom home designed around the needs of a family and the particular qualities of its site.

The house brings together a practical response to family living, with a carefully considered architectural approach that uses changes in level, angled geometry and a restrained material palette to create a refined and distinctive home.

Place

The gently sloping site presented an opportunity to create a home that follows the natural contours of the land.

Its split-level arrangement allows the building to step down the slope, while the distinctive wine glass-shaped plan and angled geometry respond to the site's irregular boundaries, solar orientation and view lines.

Process

The house combines conventional masonry and timber-frame construction with stained timber cladding. Finely crafted details, finishes and joinery bring precision and refinement to these familiar materials, giving the otherwise simple building a delicate architectural quality.

Impact

Evans Vogel House demonstrates how a compact family home can respond thoughtfully to both its occupants and the conditions of its site. Its carefully resolved form and detailing give the building an architectural character that extends beyond the simplicity of its construction.
